Hey guys I have a few questions about running dual gpu's with crossfirex or SLI. Below are my pc specs just so you know what I'm working with:
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131641

Graphics: EVGA GeForce GTX 295

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115211

Power Supply: 750w

Now I built the PC myself and I know some things about computers but I don't understand how to run dual-gpu's at the same time. Now my one friend said I can have the GTX 295 run the "main graphics" and if/when I buy another one, that gpu can run the "physics" of games. I don't even know if that's possible or not or if these things are even "real".

I know this may sound silly and all, but I really need some input. If you understand what I'm trying to say/do, then can you please let me know if my power supply would be able to run dual-graphics and if I can even have one card run one thing and the other run other things.

your friend isn't yanking your chain. that is a legit question/theory.

my suggestion would be to look for a GT240 or 250. those make excellent physics cards. not alot of games use it tho, mostly because only nvidia stuff can run it. games like Batman:Arkham Asylum and Mafia2 made heavy use of it. still it can be a waste of money.

maybe look into it more and decide if it's for you.

A second card isn't worth it for Physx. So few games use it and it doesn't take much to run. Your card can handle Physx and main graphics just fine.

Unless you want to run multiple monitors for NVIDIA Surround, your 295 is more than enough to run games, no need for a second card.

a second card for Physx is mainly for those who have a Radeon as primary card because Radeon does not have it.

Thanks for all of the quick responses, I really appreciate it.

Well I forgot to mention that I plan on buying a third monitor (hopefully soon). Now I assume from your post that I would need another card to be able to run 3 monitors, right?

Your card should support 3 monitors, if it has 2 DVI and one HDMI out, as many 295s do. Performance is another story. Depending on the size of the monitors used, running 3 displays in 3D games will lower framerates.

the cool thing about using multiple monitors, if you want to use your center one for gameing and just use the other two for a expanded desktop you can.

make sure to check out the matrix screensaver for maximum effect. Link

I got a server in my living room that has a bit of a noisy fan.
It's the case fan.

The server itself lays on it's side though (space issues) and I had a thought about disconnecting the case fan.

The case only has 1 fan, in the rear. Other than that, the cpu fan/heatsink is the only fan in here.
Since the server is laying on its side, I noticed that the side vent holes are actually directly above the cpu, and a good majority of the Mobo.

Do you think it would work out to just disconnect that rear fan? I know you need airflow through the case, but in all honesty this thing shouldn't get hot at all. It's a basic back-up and minecraft server. Integrated gpu and all that, so there's nothing else to really get hot.

I don't believe I can control the fan speed. I haven't really looked into it, but last I heard you need a 4 pin power connector, which is more high end. I definitely did not go high end on this. I'd daresay I didn't even go mid-range.
The fan is definitely kicking out a hell of a lot more air than it needs to. It sounds it, and feels it.

I can get pics of it all if you'd like, also

Is the fan itself making the noise or is it vibrations from the fan on the case???

W@@dy, I suggest you get a fan controller or a silent fan.
The fan control dont have to be something fancy, a simple resistor could be enough (like ZM-RC100)

If the fan runs off of a 4-pin molex, you could mod it to run on either 5v or 7v to run slower and quieter:
