Today I worked for 7+ hours creating materials for my AA3Pipeline port but because I never used them in the map when I saved the map it decided to just not save any of them.

Seriously? This is the 5th time this has happened to me. I've had 20+ hours worth of work go down the drain because of this. This is just stupid. If I add something to the map file, save it. If I publish a map, then sure you can not add unused elements to save space. But when I save a map to my local disk I expect it to save everything I've done.

I have always had this problem with the editor, importing objects, making materials, they all must be placed/used somewhere in you map, in order to be saved. It's just something that I have come accept. Yet it's still a pain, when you forget to actually place it in your map, before saving.

Starting to think, this is just the way that all Unreal editors work:)

Indeed. When you import anything it expected to use somewhere in the map.
It have been like that as long as I know. Next time just create a brush add you material
on each side and save the map.

Here's great workflow for you..Deltas Workflow..
I will do a tutorial on it in the next few days..but for now..
just do this..
Create a folder inside this location
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\America's Army\AAPG\AAGame\CookedPC
Lets call it
Treads_Assets
It should now look like this
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\America's Army\AAPG\AAGame\CookedPC\Treads_Assets
Now lets start up AAPG:AME "Advanced Mission Editor"
Once the content browser is up lets start importing our Awesome assets...
click import and find the location of your textures..
click on your diffuse textures and import these.
Lets call the package
package name Tread01
Grouping textures
Name Your textures name
Then import your Normal maps..
But with normal maps make sure you change
Compression settings in Options
to Tc_NormalMap
Once done you will see your awesome package now right clik on it and save.It will want a direction for this package to be saved in so save it here
C:\Users\YourPCNAME\Documents\My Games\America's Army Proving Grounds\AAGame\Unpublished\CookedPC\Treads_Assets..
That's it your assets are safe now...
Start adding your custom assets to your map..
I will write up a tutorial on the full process from start to finish.ASAP..

I save every 5 minutes when working on anything in the editor ... never think that any software is always stable ...

For custom assets though don't you need to save them within the map file itself? Otherwise you would have to include your packages when you publish (which steam doesn't support)?

@treadhead61 , You're correct. you don't want to create external package at the moment, Only way you can distribute them is manually.

@ DT, also if you want to create external packages, you're probably better off saving them in your document folder and not your program files folder. Reason being is the path is reading from the document folder, so regardless if you save your assets in program file it makes copies of them and they get saved in document folder. And that may cause problems because you'll have 2 of the same files in 2 different locations. At least this is what I've found when testing.

The reason I do this..As you know Wolvy my brother is I can have my assets saved safely..
You are correct about the package being placed into the Documents folder...but that happens only when I use an asset in my map and save it...then a new package will be made in the Docs folder...

Yes correct....But you have these """external""packages created...ONCE..then move all the assets from those packages to your map file.Save your map.then close eddy and don't save your other packages..Then remove your""External""steam packages from steam for later use...
I would hate to re-import the same custom mesh every map I do..
SO i have them in those packages..It basically my goodies library..when I need open them up and move to the map file...
It kinda makes your workflow a lot easier..
But each Mapper will have diff ways of doing things..

Oh I agree 100%. If external packages where working with SWS, with out a doubt I'd go that route. makes it a lot easier. The good thing about external you can reuse them with other maps you build.

But until then, we'll keep making these 600mb map files....lol
