I did ask!! They say I need to have a Mil email account.. gee when I got out we did not get email accounts! It was done on my DD214 before, but now its only done by email ...
I bet I get kicked out of here one of these days...

I got mine taken away too. It happened during the last update when AA3 merged completely together with Steam. From how it was explained to me Steam program did not support the option. They may be working on a fix for it, I don't know, but I guess Steam is to blame.

Is it therefore safe to assume that after you register your AKO to your account, you can change over to a civilian email again?

I never had to register my .mil e-mail, I only sent an e-mail to the Devs from my .mil with account name to verify that it was indeed mine. I would say yes it is safe to change over to your civ email again, and remain on your civ email even if they offer the Icon again.

There are two different discussions happening.

    Forum avatars require an e-mail from your AKO e-mail. I am sorry that we can no longer accept DD-214 as evidence of service. It's more of a logistics issue than anything else.

    Account icons for veterans are not currently supported under steam
