can the xps 8100 studio
handle an GT 430 graphics card?
my gt 220 is single slot.
THe nvidia site says that the GT 430 is a dual slot.
Not sure if my comp can do dual slot.

i think that what they mean by "Dual Slot" is that on the back of the PC you have the Brackets where when removed you can place a graphic card in, some graphic cards require 2 or 3 Slots and so on! most PC Chases have at least 4-5 minimum of Slots.

if this is what you mean then look at your pc and see if you have enough of slots!

I think I need a new HDD, mine has started to make some periodic awful grinding noises :( oh well... it's lasted me about 5 years and had a good hammering I'd better start backing up some things

Might go for a 'smallish' SSD for the O/S and a new Sata HDD (not sure what size yet, depends on price I guess) for all my other stuff.

P.S. That rig will be a peach Nikooo111

The GT430 isn't much of an upgrade from a GT220. Performance will be roughly the same, only you'll have DX11 compatibility(if running Vista or Windows 7).

You'd get more benefit running your games off of the SSD. Running Windows off of an SSD will only help with startup and shutdown times. Once Windows is up and running you'd notice little difference. On the other hand, games that require frequent loading of levels, textures, etc. benefit greatly from the read speeds of an SSD.

Any reason why you picked RAM designed to be water cooled? You have no other water cooling parts listed. Also, the motherboard you picked requires triple channel RAM, so you'd need a 3 stick kit. I recommend:
